
Oliver Messel's 'Coronation scarf' Pink Champagne scarf designed for Cresta Silks by Oliver Messel to celebrate the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the design centred on the horse-drawn Gold State Coach encircled by floral elements, the Queen's cypher and emblems for the four nations, and Messel's signature in the borders, printed in colours and gold, 860 x 860mm., [1953] Footnotes: Designed by the celebrated stage designer Oliver Messel (1904-1978) for Cresta Silks. Tom Heron, the head of the company, had travelled in person to Switzerland to oversee the printing of the scarf using a pioneering technique that allowed real gold to be applied. The scarf featured on the front cover of Vogue, Vol 109, No. 4 ('Fashion for the Coronation Season'), April 1953, and is described on p. 101 as 'among the prettiest' of Coronation Souvenirs, and 'the first scarf to glitter with authentic gold, by means of a new process, which will wash, clean and press'.
