Bill Gibb: a Knitted Cotton and Fur Coat and Matching Stole 'Byzantine' Collection, Autumn-Winter 1976-77 Unlabelled, medium-length skunk fur coat with elbow length sleeves, lined in multicolour knitted cotton designed by knitwear designer Kaffe Fassett, the sides embellished with two fur tassels suspended from red cotton cords; together with a fur stole with matching multicoloured knitted cotton finished with four white fur tassels to ends, (2) Coat very approximately 40' chest, Stole 20cm x 210cm (excluding tassels) Footnotes: A similar example is in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection, London (T.1-2005). The complex, multi-coloured knitwear designs of Kaffe Fassett became closely associated with the work of Scottish designer Bill Gibb in the early 1970s. Their collaboration was notably recognised when Vogue editor Beatrix Miller selected a Gibb ensemble incorporating a hand-knitted waistcoat by Fassett as the 1970 Dress of the Year, reflecting the growing acceptance of traditional textile crafts within contemporary fashion. Bill Gibb launched his own label in the early 1970s, with instant success. This Inuit-inspired jacket displays his interest in the dress of other cultures and is typical of his tendency to mix contemporary design with ethnic references. Gibb often used elaborate trimmings and knitted details, such as the knit lining to the hood that was designed and created by Kaffe Fassett, with whom he often collaborated. Fassett continued to collaborate with Gibb until the designer's final collection in 1985. Lot to be sold without reserve.
