A Greek Islands silk-embroidered linen panel Epirus or Ionian Islands, 18th Century rectangular, the natural ground embroidered in polychrome silks with mounted figures interspersed by tulips, hyacinths and vegetal motifs flanked by birds, mounted 18 x 108.2 cm. (excluding linen mount) Footnotes: Epirus was an important centre of textile production in the Balkans, and though commercial embroidery was made for distribution throughout much of the Ottoman empire, there was also a domestic market for embroideries more closely related to work from the Greek Islands. The present lot was once part of the border of a cover or valance, and depicts mounted knights, probably Frankish lords, with white faces, wearing European crowns - a memory of the Frankish occupation of the 13th Century. For a similar example see Roderick Taylor, Embroideries of the Greek Islands, New York, 1998, pp. 136-7. Another is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (accession no. T.431-1950).
