Vivienne Westwood: a Harris Tweed Tartan Skirt Suit 'Time Machine' Collection, Autumn-Winter 1988/89 Sage green Harris tweed with tartan banding and skirt in shades of green, blue and red, with doublet-style pointed hem, gilt orb buttons, skirt with removeable white tulle crinoline (2) Jacket: labelled size 10, chest 32'/81cm, shoulder 15 1/2'/40cm, 60cm sleeves, Skirt: waist approx. 28'/71cm, 52cm long Footnotes: Titled after The Time Machine (1895), the science-fiction novella by H. G. Wells, the Autumn-Winter collection explored the past rather than the future. Westwood divided the show into different passages, using section titles such as 'Keep On Jousting', 'Urban Poses in our Togas' and 'Satyrs Play' to indicate the historical eras she was drawing inspiration from. Structured tweeds, Norfolk-style jackets and menswear-derived suiting feature throughout the collection, often worn with deliberately exposed underpinnings. A comparable example can be seen on the runway, similarly modelled over a visible ruffled petticoat (see A. Fury, Vivienne Westwood Catwalk: The Complete Collections, London, 2021, p. 153).
