American. 1928-1931. Pressed steel. This "Trencher" was one of the most difficult and expensive toys for the company to sustain, as it was one of the most elaborate toys Buddy "L" ever produced. Its complex engineering included bevel gears, mechanical linkages, chains, sprockets, and a canvas conveyor belt - all of which required significant labour and high-quality materials. As the heaviest toy ever manufactured by the Buddy "L" factory, shipping and distribution were more costly compared to simpler models. With the onset of the Great Depression, this toy was a luxury that few families could afford, which led to a limited production run and a shift in production priorities. Decalled, "Buddy "L" Trench Digger", on top of yellow mechanism and on track mechanisms. Decalled, "The Buddy "L" Line Quality Toys Built By Moline Pressed Steel Co. East Moline, Ill.", below crank motor and on tag. Decalled, "Buddy "L", on sides of crank engine. From the Yvan Lalonde Collection.
