American. 1930s. Pressed steel. Many assume that the "C.F.D." refers to a specific city, when in fact, it was a generic designation that stood for "Chemical Fire Department". The designation was used by toy manufacturers of the era to identify the vehicle's specific role in firefighting history. The "Chemical" term referred to fire trucks that were rapid-response vehicles that used a pressurized chemical reaction (using sodium bicarbonate and sulfuric acid) to propel water or foam through a hose. They would arrive at a fire quickly and begin suppression of the flames before the larger pumper engines could set up their equipment. Decalled, "Structo", at lower edge of grille and on sides of truck. From the Yvan Lalonde Collection.
