American. 1909-1931/32. Tinplate with cast iron driver. This friction toy was part of the Schieble Toy and Novelty Company's "Hill Climber" series of toys. We can determine the maker and the date by looking at two things: first, are there any markings on the toy- this toy has a marking on the hood ("PA 2709"). According to Dayton Corporate archives, if the toy has a specific "Patent Applied" for date of "2709" (April 27, 1909), such as on this toy, then it is a variation from the Schieble era (post 1909). Schieble was known for making Hill Climber toys, of which this flatbed is a known model. Second, we examine the flywheel mechanism. The mechanism on this toy, upon review of the patent design drawings, appears to be indicative of the style patented by the Schieble company. This toy would have been produced sometime between the date the Schieble company started (1909) and when the company ceased production in 1931/1932 Imprinted, "Pat. AP. 2709", on hood.
