American. 1944-1945. Wood with metal features. Wooden toys, such as this Buddy "L" Greyhound bus, were sometimes referred to as "Buddy "L" Victory" toys, created during WWII when steel was scarce, and companies had to turn to other materials as a way of supporting the war effort by repurposing materials such as wood scraps. The Greyhound bus has been a staple of the brand's lineup across several decades and was manufactured under official license from the Greyhound Corporation. The bus was highly popular upon its release, but its success was largely driven by necessity rather than a preference for wood over steel. It was one of the few, high-quality, large toys still available to keep children amused during the war. Decalled, "Buddy L", at rear of bus. From the Yvan Lalonde Collection.
