American. 1930s-1940s. Lithographed tin. This "Rodeo Joe" crazy car toy was produced by one of Louis Marx's competitors, namely the Unique Art company, and is often mistaken for being a Marx toy. The Marx company would go on to produce similar variations in later years. When wound, the car moves erratically and unpredictably, with a bucking action, hence the name "crazy" car. Marked, "Unique Art Mfg. Co., Inc. Newark, N.J. Made in U.S.A.", at ends of battery compartment and on box. From the Yvan Lalonde Collection.
