Japanese. 1957-Early 1960s. Lithographed tin. This battery-operated toy was made by ALPS Shoji Ltd., one of the premier Japanese toy manufacturers of the post-WWII "Golden Age", specifically renowned for its high-quality mechanical and battery-operated tin toys. This toy was part of their "amusement park series" with a twist of a "space-age" theme. This theme became popular during the Space Race (late 1950s-1960s). The toy captures rocket imagery, celestial bodies, and lighting, all mimicking the exciting new technologies being developed by real space programs. The ALPS company ceased toy production in the early 1970s to focus on industrial and consumer electronics. Marked, "ALPS Made in Japan", at lower edge of center pillar. From the Yvan Lalonde Collection.
