American. Late 1940s-1955. Cast aluminum with plastic crates and bottles. This truck was one of the most iconic creations of the Smith-Miller company. It was considered a luxury item, the "Rolls-Royce" of the toy world. While other trucks retailed at $2-$3, this truck was being sold for about $18 during the era. With most parents unable to justify the expense, it was this financial issue that contributed to the company ceasing production in 1955, as it could not compete with cheaper plastic toys that were entering the market. This flagship toy remains the most recognizable of the "Smitty Toy" line. Embossed, "SM", on grille. Embossed, "Smith-Miller Calif.", on underside body. Embossed, "Smitty Toys", on underside chassis and body. From the Yvan Lalonde Collection.
