American. 1897-Early 1900s. Tinplate, wood, pressed steel with cast iron driver. This friction toy was part of D.P. Clark's "Hill Climber" series of toys. The horseless carriage, as it was known, was the company's first friction-powered motor, for which the company secured one of the first patents issued for such a mechanism in the United States in 1897.
