American. 1980s-1990s. Pressed steel. Fred Thompson was a long-time collector of Smith-Miller toys. In 1979, over 20 years after Smith-Miller ceased toy production, Thompson purchased the company and revived the brand by producing limited edition toys based on the original specifications. Thompson editions have a historical significance as high-end replicas of a brand, Smith-Miller, that established a "gold standard" for realism and craftsmanship of its toys. This is a "Mack LF" cab style, which was an "L" series variant. The MF style was the smallest and lightest variant in the "L" series lineup. The "SG" in the serial number stands for "Signal Gasoline". Thompson meticulously captured all of the traits of the original Smith-Miller company models. He also recognized the historical nature of the toy moulds, which he now owned, and did not destroy the moulds once a toy was created. Instead, he retained them for future limited productions. This meant that once production of this truck reached 100 units, this exact model would be discontinued and never produced again with this specific configuration.
