American. 1957. Pressed steel. This truck was part of Tonka's "private-label" series of toys. Unlike Tonka's general retail line, this truck was commissioned by Allied Van Lines to use as executive gifts, employee safety awards and as a high-end promotional item for clients. The truck was so popular that it was eventually available for general retail purchase in toy stores and catalogues for promotional or corporate purposes, and not intended for retail sale. As a result, production runs were usually small, which meant fewer examples entered the market. This truck has a "hood scoop," a raised feature on the hood that channels outside air to the engine. The "hood scoop" on a Tonka truck dates this precisely to 1957. Embossed, "Tonka Toys U.S.A.", on tires. From the Yvan Lalonde Collection.
