The film stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a gay couple whose son is set to marry the daughter of a conservative senator, played by Gene Hackman. The Birdcage remains a groundbreaking film, for its portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters, and was one of the few productions from a major studio to center gay characters as the main leads. In a time where most films depicting LGBTQ+ characters portrayed the struggle of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, The Birdcage celebrated gay happiness, love, and family. Dr. Matthew Jones, a Reader in Cinema Audiences and Reception at De Montfort University, remarked: 'It helped an audience traumatized by a decade of living day-to-day with the threat of disease and death to laugh again.'
