Gene Hackman: A Large Group of Partially Completed Paintings and Sketches on Panel, Canvas, and Paper Including abstract works and landscapes, unsigned. (59) ranging from 16 x 8 in. to 8.5 x 8 in. Footnotes: Provenance The Estate of Gene Hackman After his discharge from the military, Gene Hackman attended the Art Students League of New York on the GI Bill to study painting. His innate talent for fine art would be a solace for him. It was recalled that on set he would '[pass] the time between takes by making charcoal sketches for the cast and crew, then offers these as mementos to his subjects.'Meryman, Richard. Before They Were Kings. Vanity Fair, 15 August 2013). Gene Hackman retired from acting in 2004, after starring in his last film Welcome to Mooseport (Twentieth Century Fox, 2004), but his creativity continued to flourish. A long-time lover of the arts, Hackman found himself quite at home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a city that has more than 250 galleries. Hackman was involved in local museums, including sitting on the board of Directors at the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. In his retirement, he continued practicing painting, sculpture, and drawing. He studied under artists such as John Poon and Geoffrey Laurence, and took classes at the Art Institute of Santa Fe. A private man, Hackman would quietly donate paintings to fundraisers, and his unsigned paintings adorn the walls of a local Santa Fe restaurant, Jinja. Hackman's personal artist's studio on his private Santa Fe property was a shrine to his innate talent and his boundless creativity. Filled with sketches, drawings, paintings of animals, landscapes, experimentations with collage and printmaking, dabbling in mediums was his passion, as evidenced by this assembled group.
