Footnotes: Provenance The Estate of Clark Gable, Christie's, New York, June 21, 2006, lot 26. The Collection of Dr. Christopher Sullivan. Artist Sam Cook, known for his watercolor paintings, moved to California in 1949 and was intrigued by nature, old barns and boats, and crumbling buildings, which he painted in abundance. His love for Northern California was evident in his work, and it's easy to see why Gable, an avid outdoorsman, would be drawn to his paintings. According to the back of the piece, written in what appears to be Cook's handwriting, it is a miner's cabin at Sutter's Mill, a sawmill located in California where gold was found in 1848, commencing the California Gold Rush.
