The original artwork is very large measuring six by ten feet at the National Gallery of Art. When Bierstadt painted it, buffalo were nearly extinct. Their numbers had dropped from about 30 million in the early 1800s to only around 1,000. The photogravure of the painting was likely produced by Goupil & Company in Paris. Only a few of Bierstadt's paintings were later made into major prints. The Last of the Buffalo was commissioned and published by Bierstadt himself. He may have created and distributed it to help raise awareness about protecting the buffalo.
