U.S.A. 1955-1959. Reverse painted glass. Aluminum case. Plastic caseback. The "bathroom scale" thermometer got its name from collectors who noted the internal mechanism and the visual layout resemble a classic bathroom scale. In 1955, the Pilkington company started to use these thermometers as showroom samples to "show off" the quality of glass they were selling. In 1959, while continuing to use these thermometers as advertising, the piece would have featured their "float glass" brand on the face. This thermometer was made during the "postal zone era". During this period, the maker used the address "Cincinnati 23, Ohio" (noted on reverse). This era began in 1943, when the U.S. Post Office introduced two-digit postal zones ("23") and ended in 1963, when they replaced the zone codes with ZIP codes. Embossed, "Advertising Products Inc. Cincinnati 23, Ohio Made in USA" on reverse. All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions.
