The composition shows Dutch sailing vessels navigating rough waters, painted with great sensitivity to light, atmosphere and movement.
Signed “M. Schouman” lower left.

Mounted and set behind glass in a later gilt frame.
The watercolour itself remains in good condition.

Martinus Schouman was a prominent figure in the Dutch Romantic school, known for his marine subjects and seascapes.
A grandson and pupil of Aert Schouman, he exhibited widely and is represented in Dutch museum collections.
