Acquired from the above by the present owner. Exhibited New York, Robert Miller Gallery, Mother's Milk Paintings, 1990. Innovator and experimental artist, Jiri Georg Dokoupil is not known for a particular style or subject matter but for his employment of unexpected materials within his work as well as for his never-ending creation of new techniques. Today, Dokoupil's oeuvre comprises over 60 series of works which include over 100 different styles and contrived techniques. Dokoupil was born in 1954 in the then communist Czechoslovakia. After the Soviet invasion in 1968, Dokoupil fled with his family to West Germany where he began his artistic career. From 1976 to 1978 he studied in Cologne, Frankfurt am Main and at Cooper Union in New York with artist Hans Haacke. Dokoupil soon went on to become one of the founding members of Mülheimer Freiheit and Junge Wilde, the German artist groups which arose in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The groups aimed to employ a neo-expressive, figurative style of intensely colored painting with a traditional subject matter. The present works are wonderful examples of the Artist's use of experimental materials and technique. They are part of a larger series of work where Dokoupil paints with milk on canvas, once the image has been applied, Dokoupil then cooks the surface until the milk has caramelized. The resulting compositions are ruled by a light tan color which evoke images of aged parchment and emphasise the passing of time.
