Beagle. 1832' (lower left, on the original mount) watercolor on paper each sheet 12.0 x 19.5 cm (4 3/4 x 7 11/16 in). full sight 29.0 x 22.0 cm (11 7/16 x 8 11/16 in). framed 42.5 x 35.5 x 2.0 cm (16 3/4 x 14 x 13/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance José Joaquim de Lima e Silva Moniz de Aragão. Sotheby's, January 26, 1984, lot 141 (as George Robert Waterhouse). Christie's, London, September 26, 1997, lot 15 (as Attributed to Augustus Earle). The present work was previously attributed to George Robert Waterhouse, but the style and inscriptions led to its reattribution in 1997 to Augustus Earle. Earle was the draughtsman - and Darwin's cabin-mate - aboard H.M.S. Beagle until the end of 1832. The engraving on page 108 of Darwin's A Journal of Researches (London, 1910) seems to be taken from the present watercolors.
