COOKERY ATHENAEUS OF NAUCRATIS. Dipnosophistarum sive Coenae sapientium libri XV. Translated by Natale Conti, FIRST EDITION IN LATIN, woodcut device and early ownership inscription on title, early ink annotations in margins (occasionally cropped), Q2 with some spotting but otherwise clean, eighteenth-century mottled sheep, gilt spine, loss to head of spine, rubbed [Adams A2098; EDIT16 CNCE 3341; USTC 811384; not in Vicaire or Simon], folio (310 x 210mm.), Venice, Andrea Arrivabene, 1556 Footnotes: FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN TEXT ON COOKERY. The Deipnosophistae was originally written in 200 AD and is an account, given by Athenaeus to his friend Timocrates, of a series of banquets held at the home of the book-collector and patron of the arts Larensius. It is also an important source of recipes from Classical Greece and Late Antiquity and it includes a recipe from the cookbook of Mithecus (now lost), which is the oldest known recipe in Greek and the oldest recipe by a named author. This Latin translation is by Natale Conti (1520-1558), mythographer, poet and humanist. The 1514 editio princeps was published, in Greek, by Aldus and Andrea Torresani.
