Rudge based the book, illustrated with plates drawn by his wife Anne, on a collection of fifty plants which had been collected in French Guiana by Joseph Martin. Provenance: Sarah Hay Williams (née Amherst, 1801-1876), bookplate. She was the daughter of William Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst and his wife Sarah, with whom she travelled throughout India during the time her father served as Governor of Bengal. Sarah was, like her mother, an accomplished botanical illustrator and corresponded with Wallich, superintendent of the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. He named a plant, the 'Amherstia nobilis' (illustrated in his Plantae Asiaticae Rariores, 1830) in their honour; by descent to present owner.
