Bettesworth, and J. Battley, J. Pemberton, and E. Curll, 1721 Footnotes: THE SYKES COPY, WITH NUMEROUS ANNOTATIONS ONCE ATTRIBUTED TO ALEXANDER POPE. A nineteenth-century note on the front free endpaper reads 'This book belonged to Alexander Pope: with whose handwriting this Book abounds', and tipped-in is a cut signature of Pope. Provenance: Sir Mark Masterman-Sykes (1771-1823), with his arms on the binding, and with ink library shelf mark ('V.I.P. 345 MMS. Sledmore' on the front free endpaper. A renowned bibliophile, and Member of Parliament for York, his celebrated library was auctioned on 11 May 1824. Comprising approximately 3700 lots it realised nearly £18,000. This volume appeared as lot 98, listed simply as 'Aubrey's Miscellanies with manuscript Notes by Pope, and his Autograph.', and sold for £3.15s (noted in pencil); purchased by Richard Heber, and later sold as part of his library sale (ink note 'Hebers Catalogue Part VI. Mar. 23 1835. Evans Cost £3.13.6.'), as lot 101, in which mentioned as Pope's copy; Sotheby's, 2 September 1970, lot 190, mentioning 'extensive annotations through the book in a contemporary hand', and noting the signature.
