ROWLING (J.K.) Autograph letter signed ('J.K. Rowling') to David ('Dear David'), giving acting notes on the character of Tom Riddle ('...Intense, pitiless, immensely egocentric, utterly cold, though possessed of charm when seeking to manipulate...') and wishing him luck, one page, creased at folds, in clean, fresh condition, 4to (295 x 210mm.), [n.p., n.d. but September 2001] Footnotes: 'INTENSE, PITILESS, IMMENSELY EGOCENTRIC, UTTERLY COLD': J.K. ROWLING ON THE CHARACTER OF HARRY POTTER'S TEENAGE NEMESIS TOM RIDDLE. Our letter comes direct from the recipient, who writes: 'I used to be an actor and back in 2001 I auditioned for the part of Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I didn't get the part, but did get quite far along in the process, and before my final casting I wrote to JK Rowling to get her insight on the character and received her response in late September of that year'. The second film in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released in 2002. In it Lord Voldemort's true identity is revealed to be that of Tom Marvolo Riddle (an anagram of 'I am Lord Voldemort'), a Hogwarts pupil and Slytherin prefect, whose ancestor was one of the school's founders, Salazar Slytherin. Riddle, a manifestation of Voldemort's teenage self, is released from a magical diary by Ginny Weasley and he uses her to unlock the Chamber of Secrets. In our letter Rowling succinctly lays out the main character traits of the young Tom Riddle and thus those of Lord Voldemort himself.
