Description: Man Ray (b 1890 1976) ‘Keeps London Going’ Rayograph, Transport for London, lithograph, 1999
Description - Commissioned in 1938, this futuristic London Underground advertisement poster, by the Surrealist artist Man Ray, recently fetched the highest ever price for a transport poster at auction. It is quite unlike any other poster in terms of both appearance and how it was made.
‘Rayographs’ as they became known as the image is the product of a camera-less photographic process. This involved placing three-dimensional objects directly onto photographic paper and exposing them to light.
Man Ray's depiction of the roundel orbiting Saturn against the dark night sky was first printed by Waterloo & Sons Ltd in 1938 for Transport for London and displayed on London's Underground as a set of two posters.
