Russia, circa 1800. -Saint Demetrius and Saint George- Egg tempera and gold on chalk ground on wood, approx. 30.5 × 25.5 cm. Rare Russian icon with the joint depiction of the holy Great Martyrs Demetrius of Thessaloniki and George. In the center, St. George appears as a dragon slayer on a white horse, crowned by an angel, while he defeats the symbol of evil with his lance. To the right is the king's daughter, above whom the king and queen observe the events from the city battlements. To the left, St. Demetrius rides, also shown as a victorious warrior, striking down the pagan opponent. Above him rises the city silhouette of Thessaloniki. Verso two (missing) sponki, good condition, traces of age and use. Expertise from the Icon Gallery H. Brenske is included.
