
ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT A collection of seven large illuminated initials (Q, B, E, N, E, D, D) cut from a large manuscript choirbook or antiphonal, on vellum, blue, red, green and white on gilt background, most embellished with acanthus scrollwork, one ('Q') with decoration of two dolphins and coronet above a letter 'L', the group mounted within one frame, each letter approximately 180 x 100mm., [France, late fifteenth century] Footnotes: The large initials are executed in the distinctive manner French illuminators working in Paris and Northern France during the latter half of the fifteenth century. The letter 'Q'is decorated with a letter crowned letter 'L' flanked by two dolphins, possibly an heraldic allusion to the Dauphin of France (possibly Louis XI who was dauphin until his accession in 1461).
