Dubbed the ´Match of the Century´, the World Chess Championship between Spassky and Fischer was publicised as a Cold War confrontation between the United States and the USSR. The match attracted more worldwide interest than any chess championship before or since. Fischer was the victor and became the first American-born player to win the world title. His win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship.
