DEVOSGE ANATOLE: (1770-1850) French painter. A.L.S., A. Devosge, one page, 4to, Dijon, 20th January 1818, to Monsieur Vallot, a doctor, in French. Devosge writes concerning some caricatures which had been sent to the academy, expressing his surprise that they may be of interest in England, and remarking ´l´artiste auteur de ces productions a voulu prouver que par de simples lignes, ou peut représenter tous les mouvements que le corps humain peut donner; chose comme depuis longtemps, et en effet on ne doute par que les premieres figures ne présentant deux hommes dans l´attitude de se boxer la seconde les mouvements en sont plus raprochés la troisieme et la quatrieme ne laissant aucune incertitude sur les vainquers de cette lutte´ (Translation: ´the artist who created these works wanted to prove that with simple lines, he could represent all the movements that the human body can make; something that has been known for a long time, and indeed there is no doubt that the first figures, showing two men in the act of boxing, the second showing the movements more closely, and the third and fourth leaving no doubt as to the victors in this struggle´) before further adding ´N´ayant pas assisté à cet exercice je n´entreprendrai pas d´expliquer les autres figures qui en sont probablement les préliminaires ou les suites´ (Translation: ´Not having witnessed this exercise, I will not attempt to explain the other figures, which are probably the preliminaries or the aftermath´). With integral address leaf in Devosge´s hand (small circular area of paper loss to the upper margin, caused by the original breaking of the seal). Some light age wear and with a few minor creases and one small, neat split to the edges, about VG
