Royal Naval officer who recovered the Enigma Coding Machine from U-110 in 1941. His capture, later given the code name ‘Operation Primrose’, was one of the biggest secrets of the war, and remained so for seven months. Roosevelt was only told of the capture by Churchill in January, 1942. Rare S.P. 8 x 11.5 in. b/w, a printed reproduction of a vintage image, signed at bottom blank margin: ‘Sub U David E. Balme HMS Bulldog 9th May 1941 Captured the German Enigma from U110’. Fine.
