Description
Good lot of seven pieces associated with the infamous Dutch transit camp Westerbork, used as a staging location for sending Jews, Sinti and Roma before transfer to concentration camps elsewhere, almost always for extermination. Anne Frank was one notable prisoner. Included is: five camp scrip banknotes in various denominations, all in light to heavy circulated condition, issued to incoming prisoners as a worthless trade for their own currency; a postcard sent by prisoner Carolina S. Frenkel, penned in Dutch, 1943, innocent, innocuous content; and a very brief note from prisoner 'E. Aron' on a postcard, July 16, 1943, simply stating that he had received a package sent to him. Very good. Camp Westerbork also had a school, orchestra, hairdresser and even restaurants designed by SS officials to give inmates a false sense of hope for survival and to aid in avoiding problems during transportation.
