William Brooke Racole. In part: ‘… I am sorry that I cannot give you the particulars of the Brandy station fight which occurred in the 9th of June 1863, as that was about the only Cavalry fight I was not engaged in. When that fight came off I was on leave of absence, but hearing of the movement of the Army I hastily rejoined my command which I found at Aldie [Virginia]. [Lt. Col.] Fred Newhall however in writing on this battle which he calls the battle of Brandy Ford published originally in the Phila[delphia] Times, & afterwards in the ‘Annals of the War’ speaks of the 3d Penna in [Col. Alfred N.] Duffie’s command, and says near Stevensburg Duffie encountered a force of Cavalry which was charged, the 1st Mass & 3d Penna Cavr’y in advance & that the Rebel Cavalry was driven through and beyond Stevensburg in disorder. When I returned to the Command near Aldie I was placed in command of the 1st Brigade 2nd Cavr’y Division which Col J[ohn] P Taylor commanded the 1st NJ 1st Penna 1st Md & 3d Penna were in that brigade & I think the 1st Mass was afterwards attached to it. I am sorry I cannot give you more information about this matter. A meeting was called of the Executive Committee about the Gettysburg monument, but not a single member of the Committee attended – I shall try again.’ he signs at the conclusion in black ink.
