
Description
(1738 - 1820) King of England during the American Revolution, it was his policies of taxation and repression that led to the uprisings in the Colonies. Manuscript D.S. with the king's 'mad' signature, 1p. legal folio, London, Feb. 24, 1809. The king authorizes Lt. Gen. Francis Dunbar of the 7th Highland Regiment of Foot to raise recruits 'by Beat of Drum or otherwise...as are or shall be wanting to Recruit and Fill up the respective companies of Our Regiment of Foot under your Command...' for a period of one year. Countersigned at bottom by JAMES PULTENEY (1755-1811), British Secretary of War and and an army officer and politician who served in the American War of Independence and French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. In 1794, he received command of the 18th Regiment of Foot and led his regiment to suppress the Irish Rebellion of 1798. A year later, in June 1799 Pulteney was made a lieutenant-general and in November was wounded in the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland, having been second in command. Boldly signed at the head of the document. Simply matted and framed. The 7th Regiment of Foot served in numerous conflicts, including the Revolutionary War, where it participated in battles such as Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse.
