Description
(1829 - 1886) Twenty-first President of the United States who took office following the assassination of James Garfield. During his presidency, he oversaw the expansion of the U.S. Navy and the end of the so-called ‘spoils system’. Manuscript L.S., 1p. 8vo., New York, July 13, 1880 to Theodore E. Bliss (1842-1917), American Presbyterian missionary, educator, and clergyman, deeply involved with the Syrian Protestant College (now American University of Beirut) and the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions. Arthur notes he has received his friend's letter and sketch, and is happy to have heard from him '...after all these years, and to find myself so kindly remembered by so many of my class-mates...Pray accept my thanks for your kind congratulations...' Some soiling and toning at margins, spindle holes in blank areas, still very good. Sold with a carte de visite portrait of Arthur. Two pieces.
