The verso bears a photographer’s stamp from St. Louis as well as pencil identification notation. The image presents Compton during the height of his academic and scientific career.

Arthur Holly Compton (1892–1962) was an American physicist best known for discovering the “Compton Effect,” demonstrating the particle nature of electromagnetic radiation, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927. During World War II, he played a key leadership role in the Manhattan Project as head of the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago, contributing significantly to the development of the first nuclear reactor.
