A THANGKA OF PEMA GYALPO EASTERN TIBET, PALPUNG STYLE, 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY Opaque watercolor on cloth; mounted with original silks. (111.7 x 69.5 cm) Footnotes: 藏東八蚌風格十九/二十世紀早期蓮花王唐卡 Provenance Private US Estate, acquired in Malibu, California, in 2003 Private Florida Collection Pema Gyalpo-meaning 'Lotus King'-is the first of Padmasambhava's Eight Manifestations and represents Guru Rinpoche in the youthful form of a princely figure. It is in this guise that he is said to have first appeared in the world. Presiding over the composition is Green Tara at the top center, flanked in the clouds by Marpa on the left and Milarepa on the right. Yeshe Tsogyal and other students of Padmasambhava appear in the verdant landscape below. Anchoring the lower corners are Maning Mahakala on the left and a Nyingma form of Ekajati on the right. The painting is executed in the distinctive style associated with Palpung Monastery in Eastern Tibet, characterized by controlled, deliberate brushwork, softly rounded grassy knolls, and subtle tonal gradations.
