AN ILLUMINATED SUTRA PAGE WITH HEVAJRA AND KRODHA KALI TIBET, PALA STYLE, CIRCA 12TH CENTURY Opaque watercolor and ink on paper; with text in ume script on both sides; text edited and annotated at a later date; recto with two illustrations. Himalayan Art Resources item no. 8837 2 5/8 x 13 in. (6.7 x 33 cm) Footnotes: 西藏 帕拉風格 約十二世紀 彩繪喜金剛與黑忿怒母經頁 Provenance Private American Collection Bonhahms, New York, 20-27 September 2020, lot 502. Private New York Collection The illustrations within this rare, early Tibetan sutra page are clearly inspired by Pala Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita palm-leaf manuscripts from Northeastern India that were brought to Tibet in the 12th century. Compare, for example, two Pala pages with illustrations of Kurukulla and Vajrapani in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1985.400.10 & 2001.445c). However, Tibetan adaptations include placing two deities either side of the text, rather than one in the center, as well depicting the deities standing above shaded pink thin lotus pedestals. The prominent swirling scarf seen around Krodha Kali here is common among depictions of dakinis in early Tibetan thangkas, such as a Kadam thangka of Vajravarahi (HAR 99625).
