A STUCCO FIGURE OF A MALE ADORANT ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, CIRCA 4TH CENTURY 6 3/4 in. (17 cm) high Footnotes: 犍陀羅 四世紀 泥塑供養人像 Published Chandreyi Basu, Displaying Many Faces: Art and Gandharan Identity: Selections from the David R. Nalin Collection, 2004, p. 105, pl. 111. Provenance David R. Nalin Collection, acquired in 1969 The head and upper bust of a youthful male adorant is shown frontally with an animated expression. The rounded face features large open almond-shaped eyes, defined brows, and a fully open mouth suggesting chant or praise. Thick curling locks frame the face, gathered by a narrow central braid along the scalp - a hairstyle closely paralleled by a Gandharan stucco head (Marshall, Taxila, Vol. III, pl. 148, no. 15). The hands, clenched and lifted to the chest, underscore the figure's devotional posture. Comparable expressive modeling appears in Gandharan stucco figures, including a male example in the Norton Simon Museum, California (F.1976.05.11.S).
