(17.8 cm) high each Footnotes: 泰國 十九世紀 萊納通描金琺琅彩瓷碗一對 Provenance Collection of Virginia McLean Thompson, acquired in Thailand in the 1930s or 1947 Thence by descent to the present owner Virginia McLean Thompson (1903-1990) was an American author and scholar renowned for her pioneering studies of Southeast Asia, particularly her influential work Thailand, the New Siam (1941). A leading authority on colonial and post‑colonial politics in the region, she conducted extensive field research throughout the 1930s and later returned to Thailand in 1947. She acquired these bowls either during her initial research period in the 1930s or on that subsequent visit. Each finely crafted bowl has a flared foot and is topped with a stepped domed cover with a gilt finial, and decorated in the Lai Nam Thong style of Chinese export ware made for the Thai market. Painted with enamel colors of turquoise, red and gold on a gold ground. A comparable example is held in the Museum of Cultural Heritage, Oslo (Habu & Rooney, Royal Porcelain from Siam, p.34, fig. 1.3).
