
A GILDED AND ENAMELLED LAI NAM THONG PORCELAIN COVERED BOWL THAILAND, MID 19TH CENTURY 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm) high Footnotes: 泰國 十九世紀中期 萊納通描金琺琅彩瓷蓋碗 Provenance Collection of Virginia McLean Thompson, acquired in Thailand in the 1930s or 1947 Thence by descent to the present owner Virginia McLean Thompson (1903-1990) was an American author and scholar renowned for her pioneering studies of Southeast Asia, particularly her influential work Thailand, the New Siam (1941). A leading authority on colonial and post‑colonial politics in the region, she conducted extensive field research throughout the 1930s and later returned to Thailand in 1947. She acquired this bowl either during her initial research period in the 1930s or on that subsequent visit. The bowl stands on a short foot and is topped with a domed lid with recessed rim and an iron-red starburst mark. Decorated in the Lai Nam Thong style of Chinese export ware for the Thai market, painted in turquoise, red, blue, orange, and yellow enamels on a rich gilt ground with exotic-cotton-leaf motifs.
