A RED LACQUER BETEL BOX WITH SCENES FROM THE MAHOSADHA JATAKA BURMA, EARLY 20TH CENTURY 13 in. (33 cm) high Footnotes: Provenance Private Connecticut Collection since 2014 Mahosadha Jataka recounts the past‑life story of the Bodhisattva as Mahosadha, a prodigiously wise child born in Mithila. Demonstrating exceptional intellect from an early age, he solves complex trials, rises to become a royal counselor, and repeatedly outwits jealous sages while safeguarding King Vedeha's realm. His insight exemplifies the Bodhisattva's perfection of wisdom. The finely rendered figural compositions unfold in horizontal registers against a warm lacquer ground. A closely related example of a betel-box is preserved in the British Museum of Art, London (1999,0301.5).
