He excelled at landscape painting, studying under Jing Hao and Guan Tong, and later drawing inspiration from nature to develop his own unique style. He often painted expansive, distant landscapes. His depictions of distant, cold forests are characterized by concise brushstrokes, a sparse atmosphere, and a preference for light ink, earning him the reputation of "cherishing ink like gold." His depictions of rocks resembled rolling clouds, a technique later known as "rolling cloud texture strokes." He also created the "crab claw" method for painting cold forests. 919 to 967.
