
ABE ANJIN 安部安人 (B.1938) A Glazed Bizen Stoneware Shuki (Sake Cup) Heisei era (1989-2019), 2007 The irregular, slightly flared form with a dark, almost purple body with feldspathic inclusions, enhanced by abstract motifs in gold glaze, the base with the artist's mark; with a double tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed and signed Saishiki Bizen shuki Anjin, sealed Abe 2 3/4 x 2 3/8in (7 x 6cm) Footnotes: Provenance Onishi Gallery Abe Anjin fires his wares using a unique 'fire-pause-fire' method that conserves precious akamatsu pine fuel, sometimes briefly firing the kiln to a very high temperature that almost melts the clay and results in a dark purple body. The high number of firings to achieve this effect greatly increases the chance of damage in the kiln. Pieces such as this are difficult to create and are as a result, rare. Regarding the design and its resemblance to the full moon, Abe has claimed that if one drinks with the moon, one never has to drink alone.
