High firing allows breaking, pooling, and runs that preserve the effects of fire, gravity, and kiln atmosphere. Yamada, who hails from a family of celebrated ceramics artists-- his father is Yamada Kenkichi (born 1923) and his uncle was Yamada Jōzan (1924-2005, Living National Treasure, 1998)-- is accomplished in multiple styles and ceramic traditions, he is consistently rated one of Japan's top ceramics artist year after year.
