NIISATO AKIO 新里明士 (B.1977) A Porcelain Vase Heisei era (1989-2019), 2015 The cylindrical vase with glaze-filled perforations, the base incised with the artist's mark; with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed and signed Hikari utsuwa Akio, sealed Niisato 8in (20.3cm) high Footnotes: Provenance Gallery Utsuwakan Niisato Akio is admired for his porcelain practice that reinterprets classical Chinese and Japanese work in the medium but also expresses an almost Scandinavian modernist aesthetic, with meticulous hotarude ('firefly') perforations that lend his vessels a compelling combination of energy and luminosity. Since this style of work is thrown with such thin walls, there is a high rate of failure in production. The tiny, glaze-filled perforations in this work allow for a unique play of light when used, hence the hikari (light) reference in the title on the storage box.
