Kawabata was a student of Katō Tsubusa (see lots 3023, 3024, and 3118) who was known to keep chickens at the grounds of his kiln. Kawabata relays a story where upon a visit to his teacher's kiln, Katō killed and cooked one the chickens for dinner. The experience of watching the chicken being killed and bled out, left a powerful impression on a young Kawabata. Here, he may have tried to recreate the effect of chicken blood seen against a white porcelain dish.
