
ONO HAKUKO 小野珀子 (1925-1996) Two Kinrande Guinomi (Gilt Porcelain Sake Cups) Showa (1926-1989) or Heisei (1989-2019) era, late 20th century Both cups circular, both decorated in single color enamel with applied gilt, one with red ground and a motif of leafy branches, the other with green ground and a motif of flowerheads and arabesque, details in fine black line on top of the gilt, both with a narrow pale blue line just below the rim of the white interior, both signed Haku on the underside; with individual tomobako (wood storage boxes) inscribed and signed Kinrande guinomi Hakuku and sealed Haku 1 3/8 x 2 1/4in (3.5 x 5.7cm), the red ground cup (2). Mirviss Ltd., New York Born into a family of ceramists, Ōno Hakuko initially assisted her father in producing conventionally decorated porcelain, but soon left to marry and raise a family. It was only after her divorce in 1960 that she was able to return home and devote her energies to a technique of gold-foil underglaze decoration that she first learned from Living National Treasure Katō Hajime and then developed further to create her own distinctive style.
