
HIGASHIDA SHIGEMASA 東田茂正 (B.1955) A Set of Shino-Style Tokkuri (Sake Bottle) and Three Guinomi (Sake Cups) Heisei era (1989-2019), early 21st century The bottle of standard cylindrical form with sloping shoulder, narrow neck and out-turned mouth, the cups of varying shapes and sizes, all with a rich creamy pitted Shino glaze with painted iron-glaze motifs; the bottle and two of the sake cups each with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed, signed Shige, sealed Shigemasa 6in (15.2cm) high, the bottle (4). Footnotes: Throughout his career, Higashida Shigemasa has mostly specialized in creating pieces in two classic ceramic styles associated with wares for the practice of formal tea drinking known as chanoyu (the 'tea ceremony'): Shino and Oribe. He regards both Shino and Oribe wares as distillations of a traditional Japanese craft philosophy that treats irregularities and deformities not as defects but as manifestations of unseen forces creating desirable effects that artists should not attempt to control.
